1. Super-Nutrition for Your Body

Moringa is a rich source of vitamins and minerals. The crushed leaves contain vitamins B6, B2, Vitamin A, and C, as well as non-heme iron, magnesium, and plant-based protein. Locals in India and Nepal eat the leaves raw and slice the pods for additional nutrition in meals.

What are the best things to drink for health?

.The best water to drink is spring water or artesian water. The next best water to drink is purified water with added minerals. The next after that is just purified water. I don't recommend drinking tap water if you can avoid it. Why? Because tap water has trace impurities such as heavy metals, pesticides, etc. and is not good for you.

Now if you need something to drink because you have been working out or doing sports, you may want to drink one of the sport drinks such as Gatorade that has electrolytes added to replenish the salts you lose when you sweat.

But how much water should you drink? The amount you need depends on your body size, and other factors, but a general rule of thumb is about a number of ounces according to 1/2 of your body weight in pounds. For example if you weigh 128 pounds, you should drink 64 ounces of water a day. But here are some health conditions that may indicate that you are not drinking enough water: dry skin, dry eyes, constipation or hard bowel movements, acid re-flux, dark colored thick urine, stomach upset, brain fog, and sinus problems. Try drinking more water!

As for recreational drinks i would avoid the so-called "diet" drinks as the sugar substitutes are not good for you. Also bad are the sodas that are loaded with "high fructose corn syrup" or sugar.

Then what can you drink other than water? I suggest unsweetened tea, coffee, lite beer, dry wine, and herbal teas. But be careful! Don't drink alcoholic beverages to excess and watch out for allergic reaction symptoms if you drink herbal teas.

Health Alert

According to a Loma University study which tracked 272 people in California, those who ate about 25 grams or more of saturated fats a day were twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's disease compared to those who avoided saturated fats. Also, a study of over 9000 people in Chicago showed that people who ate a vegetarian or vegan diet had a only a one-third chance of getting Alzheimer's disease as compared to those who ate the average American diet with saturated fats. Saturated fats are mainly in animal based foods such as meat, dairy products, and processed animal foods such hot dogs, hamburgers, and other foods.

What are probiotics and why are they good for you?

Probiotics help you to develop a stronger immune system with improved digestion. Also they help in the production of vitamin B12 and destroy candida bacteria. You may also enjoy healthier skin if you suffer from eczema or psoriasis. Also probiotics reportedly reduce cold and flu, heal leaky gut and help with weight loss. Probiotics are bacteria of various types that reside in your gut naturally if you eat probiotic foods. The types of bacteria are various but a short list is as follows:

Lactobacillus acidophilus

Lactobacillus bulgarius

Streptococus thermophilus

Saccharomyces boulardii

Bifidobacterium bifidum

Bacillus subtilis

What are some probiotic foods?

Probiotic foods are ones that have been made in such a way that they contain naturally the good bacteria that we need. Some of these foods have been made for many years and have probiotics naturally such as brine fermented sauerkraut, yogurt, aged cheese, dark chocolate, apple cider vinegar, brine fermented pickles, and other brine fermented vegetables that your grandmother made.

Other probiotic foods are Kefir, Kombucha,

Coconut Kefir, Natto, Krass, Tempeh, and Miso.

Now you should know that some foods are pasteurized immediately before shipment to stores, so these foods do not contain any probiotics. Other foods may use pasteurized milk or something as a base and then cultured with a probiotic to make cheese or yogurt for example. These are then probiotic. Read the labels carefully! Generally, foods that are heavily processed are not probiotic!

Teflon cooking pans--Warning

Pans with a non-stick Teflon coating can evolve toxic fumes if the pan is over-heated. For safety we recommend using ordinary iron skillets, or switch to the new ceramic coated copper pans. These pans are coated with a ceramic like titanium oxide or other ceramics that resist even the highest cooking temperatures without a problem. The copper base metal acts as a good heat spreader for uniform cooking (better than iron pans.) Don't risk your health with Teflon coated pans.

Dieting

The best diet to start is to eat the way you should eat, nutritiously but not excessively, the rest of your life. If you did this, eating the proper foods that provide the right number of calories for your body size and activity levels, then your weight will eventually stabilize at the weight you should be at.

If you are dieting or plan to diet here are some words of advice. First of all do not do a so-called "crash" diet. Crash diets are harmful to your health! Your diet should allow you to lose about 2 pounds a week to be safe.

OK, So what are nutritious foods and how much should we eat of each kind. See the "Food Pyramid" shown below. The picture is the latest from the U.S Department of Agriculture.

One comment about fats and oils. The best oil is olive oil, either extra virgin class, or for lite taste you can use the light olive oil. You can also use the light olive oil for cooking. You should limit the use of animal fats such as butter. Also limit margarine, and never use any oils that contain "trans-fat" or hydrogenated fats.

Also a comment on breads and cereals. Bread should be whole grain such as wheat or rye. If you have a gluten intolerance, you can buy bread made with rice flour. Another good bread is sourdough bread that has very high protein. Don't eat the highly refined "white bread", it has no real nutritional value! In the case of cereals, most of the mass produced name brand cereals have too much sugar. Even 2 or 3 grams per serving is still really too much. The best cereals are the basic whole grain cereals such as Quaker Oatmeal.

Get Better Sleep!

If you would like to sleep better at night here are some tips to get more sleep.

1.) Your natural hormone, cortisol is supposed to wake you up and give you energy to start your day. But sometimes your cortisol stays too high throughout your day and into the night if you have had too much stress or you get "wound up" about some things and can't stop thinking about them. Maybe its an unsolved problem or something "hanging fire". So, this is one thing to do: Try to get your problems closed for the day as much as you can. There is another day coming to keep working on them!

2.) There are some things you can do to reduce your cortisol level so it tapers down during the day and allows you to get a good night's sleep.

You can change your eating and drinking habits to reduce stress and lower cortisol. For breakfast eat a good high fiber breakfast with a whole grain cereal and some fruits to also add fiber. Rolled oats makes a good high fiber cereal.

For lunch add some protein and some vegetables.

Add about 1/2 teaspoon of basil powder or about 4 leaves of fresh basil. Lunch should be your main protein meal because your evening meal should be mainly carbohydrates ("carbs".), vegetables and pasta. This is the meal to eat foods that are rich in magnesium such as leafy greens, kidney beans, black beans, and vegetables such as peas, broccoli, cabbage, green beans, brussels sprouts, artichokes, and other vegetables. You also want to add some Omega 3 oils to your diet to help with reducing cortisol late in the day. Salmon with the skin on it will provide Omega 3 oil. Other fish is also good. Try to get farm raised fish to avoid getting a dose of mercury with your fish!

4.) Orange oil is a aromatic therapy that is supposed to make you feel good and lower stress. Keep a drop on a ball of cotton close to you throughout the day.

5.) About one-half to one hour before bedtime, start dimming your lights. This is the way humans experienced dusk and the coming night as time to go to sleep for thousands of years.

6.) Instead of taking of shower in the morning, take one at night. The water flowing over you releases your negative ions and relaxes you to make you ready to sleep.

7.) Be sure to get some exercise during the day to relieve stress and keep you fit.

Brain Health and Preventing Brain Disease

There is some new information that indicates that Alzheimer disease can be prevented by changing your diet. Here are some things to do to have better brain health.

1.) It has been reported that drinking green tea every day can prevent the clumping of plaque in your brain. It is the clumping that causes the Alzheimer disease.

2.) Eggs yolks are the perfect brain food and some "easy-over" eggs two or three times a week should improve your brain health (Yes we know that eggs have taken a bad rap because of cholesterol in the yolks.)

3.) Omega 3 oils really help with brain health. Fatty fish are a good source of Omega 3 oils. Some fatty fish are Herring, Sardines, Salmon, Mackerel, White Fish, and others. So-called "skinny fish" do not have as much Omega 3 oils.

4.) Blueberries. Eat 1/2 cup two or three times a week to help improve your brain function. Eat Blueberries in yogurt for brain and gut health. There is evidence to suggest that gut health is important for brain health (See Probiotic Foods, above.)

5.) Stress is a big problem for your brain. Do things each day to relieve stress, such as exercise, naps, showering, and stress relieving activities, such as social functions, parties, and maybe a little wine or beer.

6.) Keep your brain working during your days by doing puzzles such as crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and others. Sudoku takes a little study and practice to learn, but once you learn how to do the Sudoku puzzles you may find them fun and satisfying when you solve one.

An Easy Way to Burn Some Calories

An easy way to burn some calories is to do a timed fast each day. Try to fast for at least 12 hours a day and even better for 14 hours a day. How does it work? You can pick your hours when you do not eat anything. For example, if you finish your dinner at 5PM, then do not eat anything again until 7AM the next day. Or if you finish your dinner at 7PM, do not eat anything again until 9AM the next day. These periods of fasting give you 14 hours of fasting. During this fasting time your body has to burn calories to maintain your bodily systems including your brain. There is some thinking that fasting is a help to brain health also.

Watch out for certain metals in your diet!

In his book "Power Foods for the Brain", Dr. Neal D. Barnard, MD, warns that common metals such as copper, iron, and zinc are dangerous to brain health. Many multi-vitamins contain excessive amounts of copper and iron. Other sources of excess iron result from cooking in iron pots and pans, possible contaminated water and foods. Meats, especially beef are high in iron content. A vegetarian diet is better to reduce iron and metals in your diet. It is also known that large wild-caught fish are high in mercury pollution. In regard to aluminum, Dr. Barnard writes, ..."it is widely accepted that aluminum is a recognized neurotoxin, and that it could cause cognitive deficiency and dementia when it enters the brain...". Some water supplies have high levels of aluminum, and many products such ant-acids, antiperspirants, baking powder, and many others contain aluminum. Carefully check labels for aluminum.

Help for vertigo or dizziness

Common vertigo or dizziness is usually caused by fluid or water in the inner ear. Often the vertigo can be at least temporarily stopped by simple body movements, called Eply Maneuvers. See the diagrams below.

Constipation Relief non-medicinal way

Here is a food-spice based recipe to relieve common constipation without taking a medicine or a drug. .First cook a bowl of chicken noodle soup.. Let it cool for a few minutes until it is ready to eat. Add spices to taste but try to make it taste as hot as you can tolerate. It should still be edible and you should like it so that it will not upset your stomach.

I recommend the following spices: Louisiana hot sauce, black pepper, and a spice mix such as Mrs. Dash Garlic and Herb Seasoning Blend. Eat this just before you go to bed or as a first course at your evening meal.

You should experience good elimination in the morning or about an hour after you eat the soup. This is not recommended for people who have a bowel disease or who might be allergic to some of the spices used.

And of course don't forget to drink plenty of water!
